Fearless and Fairies

Today was a momentous day for us here in our little world. Perhaps you recall my swimming lesson saga from last year with Nate. He refused to get out of the car and we both bawled all the way home. Good times. Well, guess who jumped right out of the car today at swimming lessons? You guessed it.... Natey! He requested I walk down to the pool with him and then happily waved goodbye as I left him for his lesson. Woo hoo! I'm so proud of him and so happy for him. Way to go, Nate!

Some of you know that Anna, our soon to be 10 yr. old, has a great imagination. We love that she's still young and innocent in so many ways and that she has a happy fantasy world she can escape to when need be. There are times I feel conflicted about how to help her balance that with reality and well, honesty. I'm not sure we've found that balance yet. The following may confirm that to you, but bear in mind it was very late and there was no one awake to consult. It's so revealing about Anna though that I decided to share it.

A few nights ago Anna had a tooth fall out. The Tooth Fairy came to Anna's pillow very late at night and discovered a sweet note from this sweet little girl.

The Tooth Fairy was more than a little surprised and more than a little tired. She was touched though by Anna's sweet interest and couldn't bear to disappoint her so she stayed up for quite a while answering Anna's questions. She also is normally left-handed, but to add a little mystery she used her right hand. She is also surprisingly not artistic for a fairy.
Anna and Abby were absolutely overjoyed upon discovering not just the crisp new dollars, but a whole new insight to this mysterious Tooth Fairy. They have all of her answers memorized and they are both anticipating losing more teeth very soon for a chance at continued correspondence. This makes the Tooth Fairy adore these girls even more and also really hope that she knows what she is doing, but really doesn't think so.

Ange- that is like the sweetest thing I have ever heard. I can just imagine them huddling together, giddily talking about the tooth fairy. I think it really is so sweet that Anna is so believing in things like that.

Wow. That is just so funny and cute.

My favorite questions:

Marital status/kids
BFF's name
"Sorry if the questions were personal"

My favorite answers:

"Taylor." ???? The tooth fairy's best friend's name is Taylor????!!

"Thank you for your interest."

Bravo, Ange! I love that image, like Reba said. And good for you for playing along. Children with active and prolonged childhoods are much happier adults (granted, they may have some speed bumps at stake dances, but in the long-term they're best off).

Awesome about Nate! The same thing happened with Zach and kindergarten. Sometimes they just need time. Good for you for being brave enough to go with your instincts and not the pressure of what everyone else is doing.

That is the funniest thing I have seen for such a long time. Unbelievable. I love that you gave answers. They seem just a little half-hearted, but game nonetheless. I am dying at this. She is nuts.

So seriously, in her heart of hearts, Anna really knows this was you, right? My guess is she likes the fantasy, but deep down she knows what's up. Or she would if Brennan's level of belief in fairies wasn't a 3.

P.S. The tooth fairy probably should have left a note castigating her sharply for being careless with her tooth, don't you think? I would think this is serious business for the tooth fairy.

oh my word! I am so glad you shared that! that has to be the funniest, cutest, sweetest thing I have heard in awhile. I love how young she is, I would try to keep her that innocent and imaginative for as long as possible, its just so sweet and refreshing. Besides the image reba and braden pointed out of the girls loving the answers, I keep cracking up at picturing you taking this "test" and just racking your brain for names of bff, and how to draw a picture of yourself. LOL wow, good stuff. and yea btw like ryan says, do you think she really knows its you?

oh my gosh I am laughing so hard right now I am crying. the first time I read this post I didn't click on the paper and therefore didn't see some of your answers. This time I did, and wow, anna;"sorry if these questions were personal." tooth fairy; "thank you for being interested." LOL. i just keep picturing tired, exhausted, left handed writing right handed tooth fairy coming up with this. so funny!

lolol. So funny.

Taylor and the thanks for being interested stuff is classic.

You know what would have been funny? In the picture she wanted you to draw of yourself you should have drawn a lizard or spider or dog or something.

I love it! Oh man, to be a kid again. How exciting for them to have read the fairy's answers. I was in fourth grade when someone blurted out that they saw their parents putting presents out and that there was no Santa. Even after that I still questioned it though. I think Anna still has a good several years! You are such an amazing mom.

So adorable and creative note and answering method.

How unusual for your kids not to just take the money and run; but to actually "care" about the personal facts of this "wonderful creature" This is the cutest thing I have ever read about the children. You can really tell they don't just sit in front of a TV all day long. Love to all the kiddies!!!

This is impossibly charming. How does a 9-year old stay so untouched in today's environment. That says a lot about you and Brenn as parents, although (like Ryan) I'm now seeing the cynical, sick side of Brennan answering a 3 on the 1-10 belief in fairies.

I cannot wrap my mind around Anna getting up this questionnaire. It shows me the iceberg nature of her imagination. What else is in there? Someone ought to map it before it is blown away like so many dandelion spores by life's harsh reality.

And Ange, 100 bonus parent points for taking the survey. What drama and intrigue that creates. You're so great!
