Christmas Eve

We had such a nice Christmas this year.  I even had a mini-meltdown Christmas night sobbing to Brennan that our kids are kind of at the perfect ages.  I was wishing we could freeze them.  I know that’s not right and that I’m selling the future short, but it I can’t help but be sad thinking we won’t always have a 2 year old.  Anyway, it was truly wonderful.

Christmas Eve we enjoyed a quiet (okay so quiet kind doesn’t exist at our house, but quiet-ish) dinner.  My parents came over which made is so special.   Dinner turned out yummy and my Mom brought her always welcome wassail.  After dinner we opened our new jammies which is always a highlight.  It always cracks me up how incredibly excited my kids get over pajamas.  They’re so happy to get to open anything that something I could hand them any other time of year with very little reaction is a huge deal.

You kind of can’t see the full cuteness of these jammies, they’re so soft I love him in these.

After dinner and jammies, we watched “Muppet Christmas Carol”  I adore that show, it’s kind of the perfect way to watch that story because it’s a little less intense for the little ones and I love the music.  I love the Muppets.  Anyway, it was sweet to cuddle up on the couch and enjoy a beautiful story via movie.

Christmas Festivities

What a great season, it’s been a busy one, but a good one.  Here are a few of the things we did leading up to the big day.

I had to get a pic. of our cute Relief Society Christmas dinner.  Two of our fearless leaders and one of their husbands hung all those balls, isn’t that a cute idea?

I wish I would have gotten pics. of our extended family parties, they were great but I’m always having too much fun to remember to take pictures.  Good times!

Recipe: Pork Tenderloin with Raspberry Sauce

For our Relief Society Christmas dinner we made a delicious pork tenderloin with raspberry sauce.  I decided to use that for our Christmas Eve dinner too and it’s so yummy, pretty and festive,  I wanted to record it for posterity:

Make a rub with garlic powder, salt, pepper, sage and rosemary.  Rub the rub into the tenderloin and then cover with foil and put it in the fridge for a  few hours.  About 45 minutes before you want to serve it, sear the tenderloin in a VERY hot pan on the stove til nice and brown.  Place the seared meat on a jellyroll pan and bake uncovered at 400 degrees for about 20-35 minutes.  Use a meat thermometer, but remember it will continue to heat up after you take it out.  Let the meat rest for 10 minutes before slicing and adding the sauce.

While the meat cooks start the sauce:

1 12 oz. jar raspberry preserves

1/4 c. light corn syrup

1/4 c. red wine vinegar

1/4 tsp. salt

1/4 tsp. nutmeg

1/4 tsp. ground cloves

1/8 tsp. ground black pepper

1/4 tsp. ground cinnamon

Combine preserves, corn syrup, vinegar, salt, and spices in saucepan.  Bring to boil and boil for 1 minutes.   Pour sauce over sliced meat and serve the remaining sauce with the meat, you can’t have too much sauce!  I would always at least double the sauce.

Big Night Out

In November we got to attend a Gala.  It’s just fun to have a chance to really get all dressed up and have a great night with a great date.

Christmas Memories

For my beloved bookclub this month, our hostess suggested that since we read so much we should be improving our writing and challenged us to write a Christmas memory to share at our gathering for December.   I decided to post mine so my kids would get a sense of those years for me.

As a child, of course, I loved Christmas. What's not to love about Christmas as a child? You get all of the fun with none of the work and there was something particularly special and comforting in having traditions I could count on every year. Watching “It's A Wonderful Life” on Christmas Eve, trying to sleep later that night with all my siblings in my oldest brother's room, watching that clock radio taunt us with it's impossibly slow time, racing upstairs when the appointed hour FINALLY came and then waiting for another eternal stretch while my parents lit a fire and every candle imaginable, turned on tree lights and Christmas music, set up the video camera and who knows what else while we anxiously awaited in the hall, and then that dream-like moment when we were ushered in and knew right where to look (we each had a spot, mine was the rocking chair) and saw more than we'd dared hope for. We knew we had cinnamon rolls to look forward to for breakfast and a few lazy hours to play with new toys or new clothes to try on, and time to enjoy the mellowness of expectations fulfilled.

Around lunchtime, we'd head to Ogden, first to the Bells'. There would be lots of uncles and aunts and cousins and food, my particular favorite was Grandma's homemade rolls. Grandma was usually bustling around with a furrowed brow because inevitably a gift or two was always missing. You never minded if you left that day without a gift, she'd find it eventually and you mostly felt so bad about how badly she felt.  For some reason I found it endearing, I guess it was evidence that my saintly Grandma was still human.  Grandpa sat waiting with his cane ready to hook you in and nuzzle your cheek with his rough gray whiskers; it hurt, but it was worth it to be loved by Grandpa. Grandpa would sometimes decide a talent show was in order and insist on a command performance of some piano recital pieces or vocal solos or duets. That last thing you wanted to do was play a cheezy rendition of “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer”, and you were pretty sure it was the last thing anyone else wanted to hear, but you didn't say no to Grandpa, not because he was mean or scary – you just didn't say no to George Bell.

We never wanted to go, because usually just as we had to leave everyone was tired and punchy and ready for a quality schmooze and lots of laughing. The kind of laughing that made my Uncle Justin slap his knee so hard it had to have left a bruise. When Justin slapped his knee, you knew things were going to get good. But, it was time to head to the Barkers and once we got there we were always glad we'd come. There was another whole lot of aunts, uncles, cousins and food there too. There was always a new Christmas decoration to admire that Grandma and my aunts had created and sold at boutiques and given to friends and family. Our gifts were often homemade and always perfectly picked. One year it was a quilt with a matching flannel robe. That was the coziest blanket I've ever had. Grandpa Barker was never loud or talkative, but his eyes lit up when the family was gathered, especially when the little ones were around – they all loved him, we all did. Grandma was a gifted hostess and always energetic and fun.  She knew just how she wanted everything and usually insisted we gather around the piano for a rousing rendition of “For Unto Us a Child is Born”. Sometimes Grandma, my Mom and her 2 sisters would do some of their quartet pieces, like “Silver Bells” which usually ended prematurely in giggles – a phenomena my normally good-humored Grandma never found funny.

We'd drive home filled to the brim with love and laughter and deep down you were slightly cognizant of the fact that you were completely, 100% content. We were usually quiet on the way home, just enjoying that tired happy feeling.

As much as I loved all of those traditions one year things went very differently and that's the year, the year that threatened to be the very worst Christmas, that actually stands out in my memory as being extra special. It started out the usual happy way, but then it became apparent that snow threatened to ruin our plans. It snowed and snowed and snowed on Christmas day. It snowed so much that my parents announced it was too dangerous to drive to Ogden. I was stunned. I hadn't thought it was even an option not to go to Ogden on Christmas. There were years someone was sick so one parent stayed home with that sibling, but whomever could ALWAYS went. Evidently, it was an option but I didn't see how we could celebrate Christmas without Grandparents and cousins or uncles and aunts. I was so disappointed, and what was worse is it was nobody's fault so I couldn't even be mad at anyone for ruining Christmas.

At some point I guess I quit pouting long enough to remember that I had a bounty of new things to do and fellow captives to play with. We played games and entertained each other as best we could. Later that afternoon one of my Mom's good friends, who lived down the street called and invited us and another neighboring family down to their house. We were thrilled to have somewhere to go, even though neither family had kids my age or the ages of most of my siblings, still it was something. We walked outside to the freshly powdered street. I remember we sledded down the middle of the street which felt particularly daring and rebellious, but there wasn't a car in sight. We laughed and slid all the way down to the Hess's house.

There we were met with warmth and hospitality and a general sense of merriment. We saw these people every week at church and probably most days around the neighborhood, but we were specially grateful to have familiar friendly faces to gather with. We were truly happy to be together. It was a cozy, merry evening that more than filled the void I had thought would prevail that night.

When it was time to leave, we did so in our traditional tired, happy quiet. It wasn't just our normally rowdy family that was quiet, EVERYTHING was still. There was no hustle and no bustle. Everything for as far as we could see was beautifully blanketed in a soft white comforter. It seemed to cover the noise and the busyness as much as it physically covered everything in it's reach. Everything except the softened glow of Christmas lights on all the houses. None of us spoke, I think even at our young ages we felt a sense of reverence and majesty for the scene around us and for the warmth inside us. The snow shimmered from the light of the big bright moon above us, and the tree branches gently and gracefully danced under the weight of the snow. As we arrived home I'm not sure I was conscious of it, but on some level, I had learned what made Christmas so special. It wasn't a magical, mystical spirit that appears when coaxed by following a precise recipe of tradition. It is the essence of Christ, the purity of that particular newborn baby King, who came and left this earth in perfect love that makes Christmas so special. When ever we gather as friends and family in love and remember Him, and thank God for Him, we will always have the merriest of Christmases.

She Won!!!!

Abby entered a Storytelling Festival at her school.  There were probably 20ish contestants from all the grades competing.  They have to memorize a book or a portion of a book and stand up in front of judges to perform their story in under 5 minutes.  They’re supposed to have some movement and can have costumes, etc.  Abby wanted to to do it last year but forgot to bring home the form.  Her two best friends got 1st and 4th place.  She was so sad she missed out so she made sure she made it happen this year.  She knew just the book she wanted to do, I checked it out for her and she memorized in it about an hour.  Then she practiced all on her own, figured out some actions and all her animation and characterization all by herself.  She did it for me a few times and I gave her some tiny little comments like to be louder and and slower, but she honestly did it completely on her own.

This morning was the big day.  Abby was the 3rd contestant to go.  I was so worried she’d stand up and talk way too fast or softly, but she stood there completely poised and incredibly animated.  I was amazed.  She nailed it!  I didn’t get to hear the others because Joshy was being over-the-top snerty.  I called the school later and they told me the good news!  Here’s the video:

Way to go, Abby!  We love you!

For Your Viewing Pleasure…

Here is Abby doing her impression of Gabrielle from High School Musical 3.  (You know at the beginning when Troy is playing basketball and is feeling so stressed so all of a sudden it shows Gabrielle in the stands singing his name and some loving encouragement).  Abby told me she just realized that Vanessa Hudgens (sp?) mostly sings through her nose.  (Still love those shows!) So this is her interpretation:

Catching Up

So much to write about and so little time.  We had a lovely Thanksgiving weekend.  It was great to have so many days to be lazy and mellow.  Thursday we went to my parents with my brother, Christian, his wife, Rebecca, and their two kids, and my nephew, David (is from TN but is attending college here).  The food was fabulous – I should have taken a picture.    Mom and Dad took the kids out to play in the leaves which they loved.  Christian, Rebecca, David, Brennan and Eliza and I played Wits and Wagers.  Such a fun game!  Soon Ryan and Macy and their kids, and Davis and Melissa joined us.  We had pie and mellow conversation.  The lightweights then went to bed (and sweet Brennan took our kids home to bed) so we hardcores could play more Wits and Wagers.  I even won once!!!!  We wrapped up at a very reasonable midnight.

I decided the night was still young, or technically morning, so I headed to Target and Walmart to see if I could get any deals.  I found a few things I wanted at Target and waited in line for about 3 minutes before I decided it wasn’t worth the wait.  Walmart was sold out of everything I wanted there so I went home and crawled into bed by about 1.  The next morning I found everything I needed for the same price online.  What a waste!  Oh well.

This is my darling newest nephew, Eli Ryan.  Isn’t he DARLING?  A highlight of the day was holding him while he was wide awake.

On Friday we hung out at my parents’ some more and the kids played games.  We all met up later that day for a big movie outing.  We saw and LOVED the Muppet movie.  The k  ids all loved it and so did the grown-ups.

DSCN0026

After the movie, my Mom fed us all AGAIN!  Then we headed out to an extended family gathering with my Mom’s side of the family.  My one uncle who lives out of state was in town with all of his kids.  They did a talent show and icecream sundaes.  It was great!  Except I left my brand new camera and cell phone there.  Fortunately my cousin, Steph and her husband found it.  When we got it back it had a few extra photos of them on it.  Cracked me up.

Saturday the kids played with friends and I shopped til I dropped.  Brennan was happy with football games galore.  What a happy, Thanksgiving weekend.  We have everything to be grateful for!

Home Beans and Cown Nuts

The other day as the kids were walking home from school, Ben kept running ahead of the group.  Taking her job as oldest and therefore boss seriously, Abby, kept calling him back.  He was wearing a blue shirt so she said playfully, “Come back here, you little Smurf!”  He turned around and said indignantly, “I’m a home bean child!”.  We’re pretty sure he meant, “human being”.

On one of our many road trips down South, we discovered Joshy’s undying love for Corn Nuts.  I know, gross; however, they keep him occupied and happy for long stretches of road so we’ve made our peace with giving our 2 year old Corn Nuts.  He calls them “cown nuts”.   Last night Anna was rocking Josh before putting him to bed.  She sang him a song and then asked him to sing to her.  He started singing an original song that went something like this:  “I lub Daddy, I lub Mommy, I lub cown nuts.”  I’m just so glad I got listed before cown nuts.

Happy Halloween!

Once I have all the kids’ costumes figured out and done I get so excited and then after getting them all dressed up 3 times I’m ready to be done.  It was all fun though.  I was especially in love with how Joshy’s turned out.  Have I mentioned how much he loves Mickey Mouse Clubhouse?  Well, he does – turns out Mickey taught Joshy how to count to 10.  The sad thing is when we discovered Josh could count to 10 I knew it must be from Mickey.  These last kids gotta get what they can from whoever they can, right?  Today we got to go to Grandpa’s work for a fun lunch and trick-or-treating at the Capitol.

We found Minnie there and had to get the two together.

100_4578

The kids got lots of candy and then we headed home for a nap for Josh.  It was such a beautiful Halloween, the kids have been outside playing all day.  I don’t remember very many Halloweens with such gorgeous weather.

After some yummy chili we put our candy on the porch and headed out trick-or-treating.  Anna went with Chloe and some other friends, Abby went with her friends so it was just us and the boys.  Nate’s friend, Kade, came with us.

100_4599

It was such a fun Fall night.

I saw this costume on one of my favorite blogs and totally ripped it off, I love it.100_4602

Abby always knows exactly what she wants to be.  You can’t tell from the photo, but she insisted that she be lit up, so there are actually little battery candles inside that look pretty cool in the dark.

100_4594

Nate was Zombie Soccer Player, he did his own makeup and took it very seriously

100_4596

Cute Ben was Dash from The Incredibles movie.  If you know Ben, you know that Dash is kind of perfect for our exuberant, speedy little guy.

100_4598

Last, but certainly not least is Josh who as I already mentioned was Mickey Mouse.

Party Girls

Evidently we’ve officially reached the pouty lip pose phase.

100_4565

These two cute girls threw quite a bash Friday night.  They did it all on their own and worked SO hard to pull it all off.  I think it was a success, all we know is there was a gaggle of giggly, goofy, girly girls up and down our stairs all night.  Here are some photos of the food they prepared and some of their décor:

Here’s their cute banner they made and a pumpkin balloon dart game

It was really funny to me that these two 13 years olds have already taken things to a whole new level I would never even imagine doing, let alone actually do all that.

Update

I’ve had such an appreciation for Brennan lately.  He’s the best.  He worries a lot about supporting this motley crew of ours and he worries about how to help me and the kids with all we have going on.  I love watching him enjoy the kids, he’s pretty open about when they’re driving him crazy, but he’s also pretty transparent about when he’s proud of them or when he thinks they’re the smartest, cutest, funniest things on the planet.  I love how tenderhearted he is.  I also love that he’ll talk to me and laugh with me and laugh at himself.  We got laughing so hard the other night, we could not stop for like 20-25 minutes.  It was one of the best things ever.   We love Brennan.

I was finally released as our ward choir director.  My first reaction was complete jubilation.  The next week I led them for the last time and was completely filled with sadness and appreciation for that whole experience.  It was one of those callings that I was honestly incapable of, but through many tender mercies and many talented, patient people it was overall a good experience, and in my humble opinion – we had a great little choir.  Mostly it taught me that we truly can do anything the Lord asks of us.

Anna is just wrapping up her soccer season and starting her indoor soccer season.  It’s been such a beautiful Fall, they never had to cancel or postpone one game due to weather.  That’s kind of amazing.   How great is it to have an excuse to sit in beautiful weather watching your daughter and her friends do something they love and are good at.  She’s on a comp team this year and it’s been a blast.   It always cracks people up watching her be so tough because she’s so delicate looking.  She’s a sweet girl, she loves her siblings and we’re so grateful for all she does to help us with them.  She’s enjoying school right now, even math – yay!  She loves being in Young Women’s and is currently completely consumed with planning a Halloween party with her bff, Chloe.  We love Anna.

100_4210

Abigail is probably the busiest,  she’s involved in a lot, but it never overwhelms me because she just kind of takes care of everything she needs to take care of.  She and Anna are doing this musical theatre workshop and loving it.  I can’t wait to see their performance in a few weeks.  In my last post I mentioned that Abby gets a little crazy, for example, she has this funny dramatic streak in her that doesn’t always make sense but is always entertaining.  The other day she was playing with Joshy and they were in a little tent thing and as Anna walked up to them she heard Abby say to Josh “Cub Josephina, you have much to learn.”  I know you’re confused, so are we, but it cracks us up anyway.  Abby is often found with Joshy, she takes such good care of him.  We love Abigail.

100_4207

Nate got a new bike and the two are rarely seen without the other.   When he’s not on his bike he’s telling me how much he needs football receiving gloves.  His cousin, Rex, has some and evidently every football player on tv.  He cracks me up when he gets obsessed about something, he was home sick one day and wanted to talk about those gloves to me all day.  He sometimes gets a little distracted at school so I’m always asking him how he’s doing in school and if he’s getting in trouble.  More often than not his answer is something along these lines: well, so and so said or did something SO funny (usually funny things like burping etc) that I had to laugh and then I got in trouble.  He’s such a cute little guy who loves to laugh, I love that about him – his teachers probably don’t love that about him.  He’s completely devoted to Joshua and the devotion is mutual.  What a cute little pair, Joshy is always asking for Nate.  We love Nate.

100_4209

The other day we were driving in rush-hour traffic to one of Anna’s games.  Benny spoke up and said, “This sure is traffic, I say!”  He has the cutest little way of saying grown-up things in such a reassuringly 5 year old way.  He loves school.  Actually, I’m not sure if it’s school he loves or just  that he’s reached that very grown-up threshold of big-kidness.  Anyway, he’s always on the hunt for “top box’s” (box tops) and is more than happy to do homework.  He has become a little less patient about running errands and doing anything else of my bidding, I think he finds it a little insulting given his Kindergarten status.  He too got a new bike and he and his best little friend, Will, have worked out a system of one of them watching to see if there are cars coming and sounding the “all clear” so the other one can streak down our very steep driveway, into the cul-de-sac across the street.  We love Benjamin.

(One of our go-to games for FHE is our version of “charades”.  We just basically act like anything we want to and everyone tries to figure it out.  This was a clever little thing Ben came up with to mimic a duck)

Joshua has taken 2 to new heights.  He can be the most adorable little creature you ever did see and then two seconds later a little madman.  He is for the most part, good-natured, but he is also very opinionated.  He also benefits from older siblings and has learned a few opinions and dramatic declarations from some pretty masterful teachers.  Today he was in time-out and when I opened his door so he could come out he yelled “Get out” and slammed his door shut again.  It’s actually kind of sad, but for some reason it struck me so funny that my 2 year old just told me to “get out.”  He is currently obsessed with Mickey Mouse.  It’s his favorite show and the only one he’ll watch.  He loves his grandparents and talks about them all the time.  He loves his siblings and his friend, Daisy.  He repeats EVERYTHING he hears the big kids say.  Ben will say, “Mom is that truck carrying furniture?” and then Joshy having know idea what he’s saying will ask me the exact same thing and demand to be taken seriously.  We love Joshua.

100_4208

I’m loving this little family of ours.  We have lots of things to work on, but I’m pretty happy to be working on them with these particular people.

One more video, of some of the kids having a good time.

Fall Break

We had such a great trip down South over our Fall Break.  Thursday, I very bravely drove all the kids by myself so Brennan could just meet us there from his business trip to further down South.  Other than the extra hour due to traffic and then another hour due to Wendy’s we finally made it and the kids were actually really good.   It was especially great to be reunited with Brennan Thursday night after missing him for a few days.  We stayed, of course, with Brennan’s Mom and Stepdad, Jamie and John.  Poor John is fighting his way back from a nasty bout of pneumonia and so they’ve both been homebound for a few months.  Friday John and I stayed behind while Brennan and his Mom loaded the kids up and braved another drive (just over an hour) with all the kids out to visit Brennan’s Uncle Dixon and Aunt Lana.  They’re the best.  Dixon has a new museum with all kinds of great Native American artifacts.  The kids loved it.  Then they were treated to a barbecue lunch and some 4 wheelers.   Of course, Lana had cute little Halloween treats on hand that the kids were more than happy to take of her hands.  Brennan’s brother, Brett, and his girlfriend, Julie came too.  The kids love Brett, and were so excited to get to meet Julie.  They also got to meet up with Brennan’s aunt, Elaine and her husband, Russell.  I was sad to miss them all, but loved having a day to sleep, read and shop and then was treated to dinner by John with his daughter, Emily, and her son, Sheldon.

They stopped a few times to do some exploring

Anyway, we reunited after dinner for a mellow evening and tired kids.  Saturday morning we got up and went on a great hike, and then went out to lunch and to our favorite old-fashioned candy store.  Brennan went home with Joshy for naps (and football games) while I took to the 4 big kids over to my Uncle and Aunt’s condo where my parents happened to be staying, for a swim.  We came home for a lovely home-cooked meal by Jamie and then went out for frozen yogurt.  Sunday, we caravanned home with my parents (which really means we stuck them with three kids Winking smile).  It was great, Brennan and I were able to chat almost the whole way home.
